We are seeking quality flash romance fiction (excluding heavy erotica that is under 1,000 words with a strong sense of conflict, fully developed characters and crisp dialogue that moves the story forward. We enjoy when characters reveal themselves through dialogue and action (“showing”) rather than by talking about their feeling or thoughts (“telling”). We like unexpected subject matter, a story, whether funny or serious, that captures the hearts and minds of intelligent readers. We only publish stories with at least some romantic elements. A HEA ending is not necessary.
All romantic fiction genres are acceptable. While personal experiences and other non-fiction can be great sources of inspiration, please turn them into fiction for us, or send them elsewhere.
Our readership is adult, so children’s stories are unlikely to be accepted unless they are relevant to adults as well. On the other hand, we are not impressed by gratuitous sex and violence, or pointlessly foul language; edgy content should be necessary and appropriate to the plot and characters.
It ought to go without saying that any story submitted to Romance Flash must be your own unpublished original creation. If you publish a story on a blog, even your own personal blog, it is considered published and therefore inappropriate for our market.
Patience: All submissions are read, from beginning to end, by our staff of volunteers and we do our best to get through the submissions as soon as possible. Remember, the longer it takes us to get back to you, the further along your work is in the reading process.
We are able to build on the strengths and voices of our editorial team since we are not a revolving group of editors. We continue to collaborate with the goal of building a flash romance site that offers fresh new romantic fiction from emerging and established writers.
All submissions are initially sent to our editorial members for a blind-read, that is, we remove the author’s name and address and identify it by a number. The editorial team is never made aware of the authors and their origins until a story receives a high enough ranking to be accepted, usually after a second reading process, and the piece needs to be edited.
Our target response time is two months, and we will do our best to give you an acceptance or refusal within that time period, or at least provide an update if our decision is delayed.
Multiple Submissions & Simultaneous Submissions
Multiple submissions are acceptable; you may have up to three stories in our submission process at any one time. However, please don’t try to upload more than one story at a time into the submission form–each story must be submitted separately.
Unfortunately, simultaneous submissions are not possible: when you submit using our online form, you must grant us the right to publish your story if we select it for Romance Flash, which you cannot do if you have offered that same right elsewhere.
At this time, we are able to provide a token payment of $3 US per story paid only via Paypal. If you do not have a PayPal account, you will not be paid. Please submit your piece with the email address that is linked to your Paypal account. Payment will be made when the story is posted on the website.
By adding your own bio to the end of the piece, you may promote yourself and your own writing. Publication also includes an opportunity to promote your writing beyond Romance Flash. We will gladly provide a link to your blog or website, and if you have a book on Amazon, we can link to that as well.
Terms and Agreements
Due to our aggressive publication schedule, you must agree to our terms and agreements as part of the submission process. When you submit your story and we accept your publication, you are agree to the following:
We ask for First Rights and specifically First Internet Publication on our website and our blog for approximately thirty days. If your story has been published elsewhere, that is fine as long as the rights have reverted back to the author. We hold the rights to your story for 30 days, then all rights revert back to the author. After publication, the story will remain in our archives unless the author asks us to remove it.
**Though the submission contract asks for your mailing address, we will never send you anything without your permission, nor will we distribute that information to any third-party.
